P6/7 Traffic Light Sandwiches
Our learning today was about food packaging and sustainability. We were surprised about the amount of plastic involved when simply making a sandwich. We also thought about the different food groups involved in the sandwich. The primary 7 pupils were fantastic at explaining the procedure to the P6 pupils, with an emphasis on food hygiene and safety using sharp knives. Everyone was engaged and seemed to enjoy the activity.
“I enjoyed making the sandwich and would like to do it again.” – Morven
“I enjoyed doing it because we got to do it ourselves and were independent.” – Shane
“I enjoyed it because it was based on traffic lights and it even looked like them too!” – Tyra
“I like making my own food!” – Joe
“I liked working with the P6s because I saw them working hard.” – Bria
“We were happy helping the P6s because we were all cooperating!” – Edward
“It was tricky not to help the P6s!” - Bria
Primary 6/7 visit to RAF Lossiemouth
Primary 6/7 visited RAF Lossiemouth as part of the 2018 Never Such Innocence project which is a commemoration of the end of WW1.
We met some very important dignitaries and heard some poetry and music written by local school children.
Much of the morning was hands on, exploring different aspects of the RAF from 100 years ago until the present day.
We are already researching different aspects of WW1 to inspire our poetry writing so that we can enter the Never Such Innocence competition. We will also be creating WW1 inspired art.
We had a great morning and would definitely recommend going to RAF Lossiemouth.
“P6 Charity Research”
P6 have been researching information about a charity of their choice to present to the rest of the class. The whole class have voted for money from Mrs MacDonell to be given to charity rather than receiving a Christmas present themselves. We’re looking forward to seeing the presentations and to make our choice.
Finnieston Crane Challenge using maths and design/technology
In teams of 3 or 4, we were challenged to build a model of the Finnieston Crane, the iconic relic of the days of industry in Glasgow…
We knew to use triangulation because that is such a strong way to build a structure to withstand the Scottish weather.
Mrs MacDonell was looking for everyone to be involved in decision making and all hands on deck to construct our train.
“It was great to work as a team” – Morven
“It gets your brain working” – Molly
“It builds trust with your partner” – Edward
“It’s good for creativity” – Erin
“We used our imagination” - Conaire
When preparing for writing non-chronological reports on factual information, we watched a short video clip about the Respiratory System and took notes.
We then read photocopied pages from reference books, highlighting the important information which we would include in our reports.
Next, we organised our notes into categories before writing our reports. These include lots of tricky spellings because the technical vocabulary we are using is scientific.
Before we go to PE with Miss McNab on Monday mornings, we participate in High intensity Interval Training in class. This increases our heart rate significantly, and we perform the exercises at a fast rate for 30 seconds, and then rest for 30 seconds. We find it to be good fun and also VERY effective in building up our stamina and fitness.
P6/7 used single point perspective to create a colour wheel background using coloured pencils. They cut a ‘selfie’ down the middle before using a 2B pencil to create self-portraits. They were careful to include the different tones to match the photograph side. I’m sure you agree that they look absolutely amazing!
Peer Assessment
Primary 6/7 on their very first day of term; looking happy and enthusiastic when sharing their work with their peers who were assessing them. We do a lot of peer assessment and self-assessment using the success criteria given in the lesson. This helps us to become Successful Learners – and we always like to see each other’s work.
